- In the Kootenay region most high glass content ‘passive solar’ designs suffer from over heating in the summer and extreme heat loss in the winter. The result is a high net energy consumption because of the cooling and heating required.
- we spend most of our time indoors when it is cold and dark outside. That is when we want to surround ourselves with light and warmth, instead we are exposed to dark cold surfaces.
- human perception of temperature is determined by the surrounding air temperature and adjacent surface temperatures. Cold glass surface temperatures will require an increase in air temperature to compensate.
- indoor ‘wind chill’ is created when warm air cools down in front of cold surfaces and falls, creating the sensation of a draft although no obvious air leaks exist.
