Shape

  • the energy efficiency of a building envelope is predominantly determined by it's thermal conductivity. However, another important factor is the ratio between floor surface and envelope surface. The more bay windows and side wings are added to a dwellings foot print the more envelope surface area per sq.ft. of floor space is created. The result is increased heat loss during the winter months
  • a slightly rectangular foot print allows for the ‘living side’ of the building to be opened up to the South and the ‘working side’ of the building to be more closed to the North, while maintaing an advantageous floor to envelope ratio
